Crude Oil

Crude Oil, 2009
Video

The 21st century means global competition for the black gold and power of oil. The West in China used to be the poorest region in the country. It consists mostly of the Gobi Desert and hilly country. Today this region relies on oil exports, coal and metal ores for its income. Mined areas are constantly expanding and at an accelerating speed. The Gobi Desert, hilly areas and adverse natural climate prove no match to the power of man and machine. The film was shot at a high altitude in the Gobi Desert in northwestern China. It shows the heavy industry of crude oil being extracted and the work of groups of laborers who do tiring and dirty work and make long days. Wang Bing follows the workers in their canteens and dormitories, while they play cards and he also listens to them talking about women and money.
