Transparent Territory 1

Gerhard Marx
Transparent Territory 1, 2016
Cut and reconstituted map fragments on board
Work: 85 x 85 cm

Transparent Territory 1, 2 and 3 are constructed entirely from discarded and decommissioned maps with an emphasis on masses of land – territory. Through fragmentation and reorganisation two-dimensional drawings are created that aim at constructing an interiority within the flatness of the map’s surface. Working towards this illusive interior is an act of cartographic mining – a digging into the actual surface and terrain of the map. The Transparent Territory series focuses on visual constructions in which folding, knotting and overlay constructs a palimpsest of geography and historical time in a manner that contradicts and undermines the assumed authority and individuated voice of the singular map.
