Cassi Namoda in AMAKA Studio

Over the years, the gathering has been a meeting point that has bridged gaps between art markets across the continent and its diaspora. For art makers and lovers alike, it has been a catalyst. While African art reflects social uprisings and the uniqueness of Africa, this year’s iteration, themed “The Notion of Time”, seeks to celebrate a decade of the lasting changes that contemporary art has experienced.

With her poem, In and Out of Time, Maya Angelou gifted us a limitless balm which serves as the departure point for Natasha Becker and Mariella Franzoni in their co-curation of the Tomorrows/Today section of the fair. This curated section spotlights solo work by emerging artists, and 2023’s exhibition, titled “In and Out of Time”, encapsulates a constellation of gifted women and queer artists from disparate junctions of the continent.

“For Mariella and myself, when we discussed what aspect of that we will bring to the Tomorrows/Today section, we wanted to explore temporality, which is about our relationship to time,” explains Becker. Take, for instance, the culturally transcendent paintings of Cassi Namoda.
