Gabrielle Goliath named 2019 Standard Bank Artist of the Year for visual art

Johannesburg-based multidisciplinary artist Gabrielle Goliath has been named the Standard Bank Artist of the Year for Visual Arts. Goliath has been recognised for her socially-based practice which involves the negotiation of complex social concerns, particularly in relation to situations of gendered and sexualised violence. As winner of this award Goliath will realise a project that continues her interest in exploring music’s capacity to both commemorate and evoke nostalgic memory, while navigating the possibilities and ethical demands of performing and making ‘shareable’ traumatic recall of rape survivors in South Africa. Once complete, the finished work will be exhibited throughout the country.
