Three Maria's not so new in the city

Cassi Namoda
Three Maria's not so new in the city, 2019-2020
Acrylic on canvas
Work: 193 x 147.3 cm

Cassi Namoda is a painter and performance artist who explores the intricacies of social dynamics and mixed cultural and racial identity. Capturing scenes of everyday life, from mundane moments to life-changing events, Namoda paints a vibrant and nuanced portrait of post-colonial Mozambique within an increasingly globalised world. The foreground is dominated by Maria, a recurring character in Namoda’s narratives, which are often set in Mozambique during the Portuguese occupation. Maria is a multi-dimensional character and an “expanded metaphor for life in post colonial Mozambique”, say Namoda.
