I Can't Go On, I'll Go On

Alfredo Jaar
I Can't Go On, I'll Go On, 2016
Work: 50 x 50 cm

Alfredo Jaar’s I CAN’T GO ON. I’LL GO ON explores the nature of Latin American identity, specifically in relation to how it has been framed in a grand historical narrative. Adopting a quote from Samuel Beckett, ‘I can not go on - I will go on,’ he explores the first-person perspective, shifting power from the historical and into the personal. The neon light installation expands on Jaar’s extensive use of poetry as critique and was shown at the exhibition, Lembre-se de Lembrar: an approach of Latin American artists to its history.
