Berenice 10 - 28

Gabrielle Goliath
Berenice 10 - 28 , 2010
Pigment inks on cotton baryta
Work: 108 x 75 cm

On Christmas Eve, 1991, Berenice - a childhood friend of the artist's - was shot dead in a ‘domestic incident’. In Berenice 10-28, nineteen brown women give of themselves as surrogate representations. 'Standing in' for Berenice, the portraits mark her absent presence - one portrait for every year from that of her death to that of the works realisation in 2010.
