David Koloane and Sam Nhlengethwa at JAG

Works by David Koloane and Sam Nhlengethwa form part of the Weltkulturen Museum’s collection and traveling exhibition, A Labour of Love, on show at the Johannesburg Art Gallery (opens 13 August). Co-curated by Gabi Ncgobo and Dr. Yvette Mutumba, with assistance from fine art students at the University of the Witwatersrand, the exhibition explores artworks from this collection whilst showcasing contemporary artistic productions from South African artists who examined these historic pieces from various angles. The majority of these historic works was created in the mid-1980s when outbreaks of violence between anti-apartheid organisations and the nationalist apartheid government led to a national state of emergency.
