Kiluanji Kia Henda wins major sculptural commission award in London

Congratulations to Kiluanji Kia Henda on winning the 2019 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair courtyard sculptural commission.

Kia Henda, supported by Kamel Lazaar Foundation, will present a sculpture entitled The Fortress – The Building Series IV, a part of his A city called Mirage series at the seventh London edition of the fair in October.

The sculptural installation serves as a reminder of the ephemerality of human constructions, and investigates the idea of cities oscillating between states of virtuality and desertification, using the erosion and transience of the Angolan desert as inspiration.

Kia Henda uses science, mythological fiction and irony as ways to transcend pessimism, hyper-criticism and the aesthetics of the ruin.
