William Kentridge’s 'll Ritorno d'Ulisse' in Palermo, Italy

William Kentridge’s version of Monteverdi’s opera Il Ritorno d’Ulisse is set to return to the stage at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo (7 – 10 February). In Kentridge’s version of this famed opera, Ulisse lies in a hospital bed in Johannesburg, recounting his epic ten-year journey following the Trojan War to find his wife Penelope. Ulisse takes the form of a puppet watching his former self re-enact a past brought to life through Kentridge’s animated charcoal drawings and a fellow cast of life-sized wooden puppets carved by Handspring Puppet Company.
