| Pat Mautloa is interested in the factors that characterise the city situation. He explores the relationship of the city environment to the people who inhabit it. In some works he looks at space, and the absence of people within that space. It is often the marks that people leave which speak about the people themselves. Conversely, the faces one sees when walking through town reflect the vibe of the city – both its positive and negative aspects. Throughout his works, both past and present, Mautloa has been concerned with texturing and layering in relation to his media and to his interaction with his subject matter: this process metaphorically speaks about the passage of time, the movement of people and the many layers – spiritual and physical – which make up the fibre of the city. – Press release 1999 |
