After completing three short photographic
courses at the The Market Theatre
Photography Workshop in Johannesburg -
Jodi was selected to participate on a
photographic training programme at the Star
newspaper by the late Ken Oosterbroek in
September 1993. She continued to work there as a photographer leading up to and during South Africa’s first democratic elections. 1996 was a turning point. She was chosen to participate in the World Press Master class held in Holland and started working on assignments for publications like NY Times Magazine, Geo and Stern magazine. She now also works for non- profit organizations like MSF and Amnesty International on special projects for booklets and exhibitions. Over a ten-year period (1994 – 2004) her own projects focused on the country of her birth, South Africa - photographing youth living on the fringes of South African society. This work has finally found a home in a book - “Between Dogs and Wolves – Growing up with South Africa”. It has been published and released in five countries in 2006. Bieber has won 8 World Press awards. She was short-listed at the Amnesty Media awards (2006) for her work on Domestic Violence in South Africa and was one of the 13 nominees of the Eugene Smith Award in 2003. She received a gold for a reportage spread from the series: Ebola Crisis in Uganda for the NY Times Magazine in 2001. Her fist solo exhibition was at Visa Pour L’Image in 2002. Her work has been seen in many group shows around the world - the most recent being - 'Survivors of Domestic Violence' - Moving Walls – New York – OSI/ The Soros Foundation - September 2006. She was recently put foward for an Arts Foundation grant in the UK. Her work on Isolated Communities in the Northern Cape was funded by the South African Arts Council. Bieber has taught or been a guest lecturer at the Market Theatre Photographic Workshop (Johannesburg), London College of Communication (UK), Westminister University (UK), ICP school of Photojournalism (New York) She is represented by Fifty One Fine Art Photography in Belgium and the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa |
